Jake Buchanan, a writer with an 8-year-old daughter and an imploding marriage, gets on a plane. Sitting next to him is Clara Stone, a former teacher who has recently started suffering from agoraphobia. Jake and Clara get to talking and connect instantly--they feel like they have met before. Clara confesses to Jake that she's going to Colorado to kill herself.
